Lesson 8 – Chronology of Founding Documents – Roots of Government
Vocabulary Word: Amendment
How did the Mayflower Compact influence the American Constitution?
Students were assigned a number 1 through 6. Each student went to the station according to their number. On the flowchart students had to record the year below the box and the title of that document or government above the box. Inside the box students were to write a brief summary of how that document influenced the American Constitution. After a few minutes the students would move to the next station.
Students returned to their seats in pairs to discuss what they though was the influence of each government or document making changes if desired.
Afterwards the students received 6 total pieces of papers for the entire class with nothing but a year printed on it very large. Those 6 students had to arrange themselves in chronological order as we re-addressed the meaning of the vocabulary word ‘chronology’.
With the help of their flowchart students now received 6 pieces of paper with the government or document titles printed on them largely. They now had to arrange themselves in chronological order without the use of the years. The class reviewed the order and voted whether or not they were correct.
The first group of students then passed the papers out again to new students. The new students had to arrange themselves appropriately as well. This time though they had to say which government or document they had in their had to the whole class. These papers were then redistributed one more time.
The next group of students had to arrange themselves in the correct chronological order as well, but this time they had to tell the class how that government or document influenced the American Constitution.
